I like paper bags.

That's right. I like paper bags. And boxes. And baskets. And closets...

Butterfly Chair

It definitely is a wise decision to sit on my butterfly chair instead of a branch.

The Tree Story

September 14th
12:00 am
I am sitting on our deck as usual and enjoying the last warm days of the year.12:10 pm A neighbor’s dog shows up and starts chasing me. Before I know what is going on, I find myself on a tree. My humans were watching the whole incident totally paralyzed.
12:30 pm
My humans call 911 and after a while someone from Animal Control shows up. She says “put a can of tuna under the tree and wait, she’ll come down in 24 hours”. Of course she’s not the one who’s sitting on this small branch. My humans are clearly concerned because they know it is going to be a rainy night and they are thinking about the wild animals, especially fisher cats (hate fisher cats, they always freak me out at night with their shrieks) Besides, I usually have no interest in food, so the tuna can idea does not apply to me.1:00 pm My humans call a few tree service companies in the area but apparently everybody is so busy in this season. The humans are trying to look calm when they talk to me but I can see that they are starting to panic.1:30 pm I see my female human’s car approaching, with a big fire truck behind it. The firefighters’ rescue attempt only sends me further up on the tree, to an even less comfortable branch.2:00-6:00pm Female human is keeping me compan. She’s desperately trying to convince me to climb down, but no way! It’s too high for such an attempt. 6:00 pm: It’s started raining. I can barely see the hopeless expression on my humans’ faces. Beside my humans, even a neighbor female human is worried about me. She shows up a couple of times and talks to me until midnight.

September 15th

6:00 am It’s been a very tough night; cold and damp. I feel exhausted. My female humand showed up looking tired and upset with a can of tuna. 7:00 am My humans come and talk with me for a while and drive off in their car. It looks like they have a plan! 8:00 am My humans come back with a long telescopic pole, a metal mug, some rope, a ladder, duct tape and a laundry basket. I think we are going to play a game! I don’t feel like it though, my muscles feel kind of funny. And I’m hungry. 8:00-11:00 am Various attempts trying to get a basket near me. My humans used a branch just below the one I’m sitting on as a pulley and were able to get the basket just a couple of feet below my level. I feel so scared that I cannot even move a muscle. They have got to get the basket closer to me! 11:30 am We are lucky. A constructor guy who’s working in the area offers a longer ladder, by which my male human is finally able to place the pulley on a branch above me. Now they can get the basket right to where I am. 11:45 am Once the basket is in position, my humans leave; just so that I can be alone for the final move. I pull up all my strength and courage, and finally roll myself into the basket. My muscles hurt a lot! Now it’s time to cry for help. “Come get me, I’m ready!” 11:50 am Upon hearing my cries, my humans run to the tree. They start lowering the basket down, slowly. I feel queasy a little, all the movement and spinning. Once I’m close to the ground, my male human covers the basket with a blanket. What do they think, like I am going to run away or something? I don’t have the energy to even cry anymore, are they kidding?12:00 pm After exactly 24 hours, I’m back home; safe and sound. I get out of the basket and start sniffing around. My hind legs are so sore that I cannot even walk or sit properly. I will have to take long naps to recover. Looking forward to it!

Safe and Sound

I am back home, after 24 hours, safe and sound, after a 6 hour rescue mission. Just taking a good rest and I will be back with a great story and photos soon. Stay tuned.

Thanks for all the support!

Mamush needs your prayers

Friends,
Mamush got stuck in a tree today. She has been there for 7 hours now and it started raining a couple of hours ago. We tried everything possible, even The Fire dept. came but it only freaked her out more and so she climbed further up. From what we have been told, there's nothing we can do but wait.
Please send her your best wishes and prayers.

I spent two and a half days all alone this labor day weekend. My humans went up in the White mountains. This was the longest time I spent home alone. I did well, but toward the end I got really bored and missed my humans a lot. I gave them the cold shoulder a little when they got back but then I was on their laps purring happily all night.

One Year Ago

It was only a few days after my spay surgery. I was sitting in my cage—not so happily. On one side was the lobby; on the other was our living quarters. The lobby side was always more entertaining; kids, dogs, humans, staff.

While gazing at the action in the lobby, I saw a couple come in. Yes, it was the same couple I had seen the day before. They were looking at the kittens—who never have any problem getting picked. “Why are they still here?” I wondered, “did they not pick a kitten and leave already?” While I was thinking, the couple came into the room, looked around, picked a few adult inmates and went in to the private room where humans and cats get a chance to know each other, away from distraction.

During this time they each came and checked me out separately while the other one was playing with the other inmates in the private room. Being a cat with principles, I did not even look at them. I just sat down with my back turned to the room and continued to watch the lobby. It is not that I am rude; I just do not like “apple polishing”.

After a while the couple appeared in front of my cage. They were reading my info card and talking in a language that I had never heard before. Here I deserve some credit; it did not take long for me to learn Turkish. Take my female human for example. She has been in the US for six and a half years and her English is still broken. On the contrary; I became fluent in less than a year! I am currently a bilingual kitty. To make a long story short, I finally realized that they wanted to go into the private room with me. Now, I know I said I am not an apple polisher. And I am also such a timid one too. But still, I had missed sitting on a lap so badly that I started purring and kneading as soon as I was on the female human’s lap—the photo is exactly from that moment. I saw her nodding and saying “yes, she is coming home with us” to the male human.

Then I joined their family, and all three of us have been living together since then. We had many good and some not–so–good days in the past year; most of which you already know. But overall we are all very happy. I love them and they ADORE me. I am working on my timidness and I think I have gotten a little better. I sometimes show up when there are guests around. And hey I even go out and spend some time on our deck. I even chased two squirrels past summer. Biggest thrill of my life. I was running on grass!

I know it is not typical of me to write so much in a post but today is our anniversary. Thanks for reading and supporting my blog, which wouldn’t have existed without its readers.

Love to all
